COMING LATE 2024
OUTLIT by Undialed
Scootering can be a mode of transportation, a tool, or even a passion. There are millions of passionate scooter riders all over the globe. These riders need a place to create, bond, and grow. OUTLIT will grow the emerging scooter community. Scooter events have been very successful in the past, but we’re here to make them even better. Our vision is to pull everyone together to create a great atmosphere that will make life-long memories for riders and spectators. OUTLIT events will be the new gold standard for scooter events. OUTLIT is a project of undialed and created by Will Cashion and Clayton Lindley.
Purpose
OUTLIT has one purpose: to expand the scooter community by providing an atmosphere that encourages growth and bonding. OUTLIT is a unique scooter contest circuit that will broaden the framework of how scooters are perceived and ridden. The focus is on hype and creating the moments that matter.
The premise is simple. Unlike traditional scooter contests with timed, isolated runs and incredibly long days, we will host a more organic street jam-type event. Unlike a street jam, OUTLIT events will happen in skateparks. Street jams are successful because they are routes through cities that highlight unique street spots, and anyone can show up, enjoy the energy and even participate. There is no starting order, and also no dead time. Despite being a jam-style format, street jams are also popular because there is always a winner, with very little debate about it. Winning a street jam is based on your effort, and you are judged on everything, your attitude, your failures, your success, and your presence.
OUTLIT aims to bring this organic atmosphere into the park realm of scootering, bridging a gap and attracting a much wider spectrum of riders. Rather than a route through a city, we will feature specific obstacles in a skatepark. With every skatepark obstacle, there will be a time limit or a cutoff. The time will be determined by the number of people, but at any moment there can be a cutoff. A cut-off happens when someone beats the spot, meaning they do a trick so profound that it helps shape the future of scootering. Everyone wants to see that, and it’s a bonding moment when it happens. Another element that will make OutLit unique is that younger riders will have the opportunity to ride and compete against their favorite pros. The only place this happens now is at street jams. The atmosphere created when younger riders push themselves next to their favorite pros is beyond beneficial for growth and confidence.
We want to have as many people at these events as possible, and we want to make it convenient. That’s why we’ve paired up OutLit with a street jam the same weekend. We have four locations set for 2022: Raleigh, Austin, San Diego and Phoenix paired with street jams the following day. Creating a full weekend of events makes it easier on our audience and scooter enthusiasts in general, including families who may travel to attend. All four locations are family-friendly destinations with good weather: this is an incentive to parents and people who want to escape to somewhere warm. Parents are a driving force in the participation of scootering so we want to appeal to them. Scootering has formed so many connections for so many people and we want to continue those patterns. Connections are most easily made in an atmosphere that’s encouraging and loving. OUTLIT is an outlet for the energy of scootering and the progression of our sport/art.
Format/Structure of OUTLIT
There will be 4 unique obstacles chosen in the park. These unique obstacles will be picked by Will and Clayton based on riding ability and flow. The spots must be enjoyable and entertaining while also attractive to film. The goal is to put the athletes in a position to push themselves to new limits and to document it in a professional manner for the world to see.
There will be a timer of 20 minutes set for the Open and Pro divisions. Everyone goes at once. Between each 20-minute session, there will be a 40-minute intermission for athletes to prepare for the next spot as well as meet fans. A common problem with traditional scooter contests is there is a lot of limbo time during the day. At any given time at a traditional scooter contest, there is no more than 30% of the people actively riding and everyone else is just wandering around. At OUTLIT, everyone is either riding or not riding. This structure will make everyone at the event more in sync and it will be easier to follow what’s going on, as well as provide vendors the opportunity to watch the riding.
Pro and Open Divisions
A quick comment about Pro vs. Open: a gray area in scootering today is what qualifies someone to be a pro rider. Often the decision is made by the scooter brand owner or team manager, possibly for marketing reasons, and the subjectivity involved in making this call is a problem. A long-term goal for scootering needs to be making the line between Pro and everything else consistent across companies and teams. This would create a visible achievement line for kids to strive for, and those clear objectives and goals will create positive energy and motivation. Another complication is that when the line is gray, being Pro for one company means something different than being Pro for another company, creating unhealthy tension within the community. Being Pro should be a clearly defined achievement, something that takes time and dedication.]
At OUTLIT, you will be entered as a Pro rider only if your sponsor signs you up, or if Will or Clayton put you on the VIP list; otherwise you need to enter as an Open rider. The entry fee for everyone at OUTLIT will be $20 and will automatically qualify you as an Open rider. Everyone at the event will technically be an Open rider (including spectators) and will be required to sign a waiver. The idea is to get people excited about the event and out of their comfort zones. That way, if someone gets excited and impulsively decides to participate, that person can jump right in because they are already an Open rider. The Pro riders will have different wristbands than open and general admission. The wristband will also be a souvenir and will change from event to event.
Both Divisions will have spot winners
Open and Pro will both have a winner at each of the 4 spots in the park. The Pro prize will be money and the Open prize will be scooter parts. The spot winner is chosen based on which rider used the spot to its fullest potential or went through the toughest battle to stick their trick. If a trick gets done at a spot and the judges agree that the trick is completely “next level” for scootering, they can cut off the time and instantly end the spot session. This will be a rare occurrence but will create a goal for people to achieve. If a cut-off happens the person who did the trick instantly becomes the spot winner.
Both Divisions will have overall winners
Both Open and Pro will have an overall winner. Best overall Pro wins big money and best overall Open rider will win a custom complete scooter. The best overall riders will be picked based on their diversity of skills. The obstacles chosen in the skatepark will be unique and will test all aspects of a scooter rider. To win you must show how versatile you are as an athlete and demonstrate a spectrum of scooter tricks.
Cash prizes for tricks will be given out during the event
The money will be handed out by riders who are influential and knowledgeable within the scooter community. The opportunity to win cash on the spot will be equal for Pro and Open riders. Everyone in scootering is on a different level and the idea of a difficult trick varies from person to person. What stays consistent is the effort that’s being put in; the effort is what makes people feel good and accomplished. Because we are seeking to grow our sport and include everyone in the scootering community, recognizing effort and fostering positive energy is at the heart of OUTLIT.
